Distance Education, Self-Cultivation and Contact Education

Because we have students from over the whole world and traveling and financing often is a problem we created all kinds of creative solutions to make the study work for our friends. Distance education can often be done in combination with virtual classrooms for theoretical subjects. Practice subjects require close contact teaching and frequent monitoring of progress. Of course some video monitoring can happen, but for superficial overview only. No one can really learn from video the intricate details of practice. Fortunately self-cultivation is a large part of our program too, so managing these difficulties to comport oneself are part of the program when they apply to you.

Self-Cultivation is the core of any study related to Chinese culture, like how it was common in the west before the 20th century. Self cultivation is a process of building oneself into ‘a person of substance’, health, insight and equanimity and supportiveness. Different great masters and inspirational leaders have produced teachings about this.

Self cultivation is to help one gain independence of outside influences so that life’s events do not interfere with ones mission. The Dao of Self-discipline, building a reliable network of likewise friends and supporting ones teachers, students, clients, colleagues and study friends is therefore at the heart of Chinese medicine and Martial Arts studies.

The Oriental College supports this process during ones study time and after in all our activities. Self cultivation is also the heart of understanding ones own body and mind as an explanatory model for Chinese medicine theory and practice beyond that of superstitious mechanized use as is proposed in modern literature and most schools. It is the main preparation to become a practitioner with excellence.
